What is H4CBD?
H4CBD is a hydrogenated form of CBD. Ordinary CBD has two carbon-carbon double bonds in one of its rings. Hydrogenation breaks both of them and adds a hydrogen atom to each end, four in total. That's the "H4". It's the same basic chemistry that turns vegetable oil into margarine: simple in principle, but the result is a different compound.
That small change gives H4CBD a slightly different shape, and shape is what decides how a cannabinoid fits the body's receptors. It's why H4CBD is treated as its own compound rather than as a type of CBD.
You'll see it written as H4CBD, H4-CBD, H4 CBD, tetrahydrocannabidiol and sometimes hexahydrocannabidiol. They're all the same compound.
Is H4CBD natural or synthetic?
Semi-synthetic. It starts as CBD extracted from hemp, and the conversion happens in a lab. The compound isn't new. Chemists first made it in 1940, while working out the structure of cannabis compounds. It only reached shelves around 2022, and the UK first saw it in April 2023.

H4CBD effects: what does it actually do?
H4CBD binds to the body's CB1 receptor noticeably more than CBD does, which is why many people find it more noticeable than standard CBD. CB1 is the receptor most associated with how cannabinoids are felt, and CBD barely touches it.
The key study came from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2006 (Ben-Shabat et al., Journal of Medicinal Chemistry). That's where the excitement comes from, and it's real as far as it goes. What it doesn't mean is that H4CBD works like THC. Later research suggests it binds to CB1 without activating it the way THC does, and acts on CB2 as well. The science is early, and there are no proper human trials yet.

Is H4CBD legal in the UK?
Yes. H4CBD is legal to buy in the UK. It isn't a controlled drug, and the government has looked at it closely.
In its 2025 review of semi-synthetic cannabinoids, the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) concluded there was "currently insufficient justification" to control H4-CBD under the Misuse of Drugs Act. It treated H4CBD separately from the compounds it did recommend banning.
