Ice Cream Cake is an indica-leaning hybrid bred by Seed Junky Genetics from Wedding Cake and Gelato #33. It's known for a creamy, vanilla-forward, sweet-baked profile with a peppery depth, and it's one of the best-known dessert strains of the last decade. In the UK it's available from The Bud Works as a lab-tested THCA live resin tea extract.

Where Ice Cream Cake came from

Ice Cream Cake was bred by Seed Junky Genetics in Los Angeles, the same breeder behind Wedding Cake and Permanent Marker. Having made Wedding Cake, Seed Junky crossed it with Gelato #33, one of the most prized Gelato cuts, to push the dessert profile even further.

The name has since been picked up by other breeders for unrelated crosses, so "Ice Cream Cake" on a seed packet isn't always the Seed Junky cut. The original is the one people mean.

Not a challenging cup. Just a very good one.

Ice Cream Cake genetics and lineage

Ice Cream Cake is Wedding Cake x Gelato #33: two dessert parents with a shared Cookies background.

Wedding Cake is Seed Junky's own Triangle Kush x Animal Mints cross and Leafly's Strain of the Year 2019. It supplies the vanilla, the baked-cake sweetness and the peppery base. Full story in our Wedding Cake guide.

Gelato #33, also called Larry Bird, is the most famous Gelato phenotype, from Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies. It adds the creamy, ice-cream softness. It's a close cousin of Lemon Cherry Gelato.

Is Ice Cream Cake indica or sativa?

It's a hybrid that leans indica, usually listed at around 70–75% indica. Both parents lean the same way.

Worth knowing

Indica and sativa describe plant ancestry and structure more than anything you can predict about a product. The terpene profile tells you far more. More in Sativa, Indica, Hybrid: Do They Still Matter?

Ice Cream Cake terpene profile

Our current batch is led by three terpenes, in this order:

LeadsCaryophyllenePeppery · warm · spicy

The peppery depth under the sweetness, carried over from Wedding Cake. The only common terpene known to bind directly to the CB2 receptor.

SupportsLimoneneCitrus · bright · sweet

A light brightness that keeps the cream and vanilla from feeling heavy.

SoftensLinaloolFloral · soft · lavender

The soft floral note underneath, which rounds off the dessert character.

Terpene order varies by batch and grower. New to terpenes? Start with Terpenes: What They Are and Why They Matter.

What does Ice Cream Cake smell like?

Creamy and vanilla-forward, with a sweet-baked quality like cake fresh from the oven. A peppery depth sits underneath, with a soft floral note from linalool.

It's warm, smooth and unapologetically dessert-led.

Why is it called Ice Cream Cake?

It's a straightforward nod to its parents: Wedding Cake and Gelato, the Italian word for ice cream. Put them together and you have an ice cream cake.

Ice Cream Cake as a THCA live resin tea extract

At The Bud Works, Ice Cream Cake is a THCA live resin tea extract. Our current batch is lab tested at 82.2% THCA, led by caryophyllene, limonene and linalool, with Delta-9 THC at or below the 0.2% UK limit. The full certificate of analysis is on the product page.

Live resin is known for holding on to the plant's native terpenes, which suits a layered dessert profile like this one:

First minute

Creamy vanilla comes through first.

Minutes 2–3

Sweet-baked notes build, with a peppery warmth underneath.

By minute 5

A soft floral note rounds off the cup.

Brewing tip

Linalool and limonene are both volatile, so around 80°C rather than a rolling boil keeps more of them. Full method in Making the Cup.

Intended for hot-water herbal tea infusion only. Not for combustion.
