Permanent Marker is an indica-leaning hybrid bred by Seed Junky Genetics from Biscotti, Jealousy and Sherbet BX. It's famous for a sharp, solvent-like "Sharpie" nose over floral gas and sweet candy, and Leafly named it Strain of the Year in 2023. In the UK it's available from The Bud Works as a lab-tested THCA hash tea.
Where Permanent Marker came from
Permanent Marker came out of Seed Junky Genetics, the California breeding house founded by JBeezy. Seed Junky built its name refining Gelato, Sherb and Kush-line crosses into stable, resin-heavy cultivars, and Permanent Marker is arguably the most culturally significant strain to come out of that programme.
It surfaced in the early 2020s during a run of dessert-leaning hybrids and was released through the Los Angeles tastemakers at Doja Exclusive. By 2022 it was on discerning dispensary menus across the US, and in 2023 Leafly named it Strain of the Year.
It didn't get there on marketing. The nose is so recognisable that word of mouth did the work.
Permanent Marker genetics and lineage
Permanent Marker is Biscotti x Jealousy x Sherbet BX. Each parent brings something specific, which is why the combination works.
Biscotti is one of the foundations of the modern dessert-and-gas era. It sits underneath the louder notes, giving a rich, grounding base that stops the profile feeling purely fuel-forward.
Jealousy, another Seed Junky cross and itself a former Leafly Strain of the Year, drives the most distinctive part of the character: the floral, gassy top notes and the slightly chemical edge that inspired the name.
Sherbet BX strengthens the Sunset Sherbet traits, pulling the profile sweeter with candy and citrus without letting it lose its bite.
Is Permanent Marker indica or sativa?
It's a hybrid that leans indica. All three parents come from Cookies, Gelato and Sherbet lines, which are predominantly indica-leaning, so strain databases generally list it as indica-dominant.
Indica and sativa describe plant ancestry and structure more than anything you can predict about a product. The terpene profile tells you far more. More in Sativa, Indica, Hybrid: Do They Still Matter?
Permanent Marker terpene profile
Three terpenes lead, and they map neatly onto the three parents.
The assertive backbone, carrying the fuel-adjacent notes from Jealousy. The only common terpene known to bind directly to the CB2 receptor.
Lifts the profile and works with the Sherbet BX side to bring in the candy-like contrast.
The base layer most associated with Biscotti, giving the profile its body.

What does Permanent Marker smell like?
Floral and gassy first, with a sharp, solvent-like edge people compare to uncapping a Sharpie. Behind that come sweet candy and citrus from the Sherbet side, then an earthy, slightly baked depth from Biscotti at the base.
Most profiles from this era are sweet-first. Permanent Marker is gas-and-floral first, with sweetness following. It can divide opinion on first encounter, then tends to win people over.
Why is it called Permanent Marker?
It's named after the aroma: a sharp, solventy, marker-pen nose that comes off the jar before you've even handled it. That quality comes mainly from the Jealousy parent and is what makes the strain unmistakable.
Permanent Marker as a THCA hash tea
At The Bud Works, Permanent Marker is a pressed THCA hash tea. Our current batch is lab tested at 25.6% THCA, led by caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene, with Delta-9 THC at or below the 0.2% UK limit. The full certificate of analysis is on the product page.
Pressed hash releases its aroma steadily through a steep, which suits a layered profile like this one:
Floral gas and that sharp marker edge come through first.
The Sherbet side follows with sweet candy and citrus.
The earthy, baked Biscotti base settles in underneath.
Around 80°C rather than a rolling boil keeps more of the volatile limonene and caryophyllene. Full method in Making the Cup.
Intended for hot-water herbal tea infusion only. Not for combustion.
