Blue Zushi is an indica-leaning hybrid bred by The Ten Co. from Zkittlez and Kush Mints. It's known for a sweet berry and tropical-candy nose cooled by mint, and it picked up Best Overall Strain at the 2023 Zalympix in Los Angeles. In the UK it's available from The Bud Works as a lab-tested THCA hash tea.

Where Blue Zushi came from

Blue Zushi was created by The Ten Co., a Southern California breeder known for working with Zkittlez genetics, around 2019. The prized clone became something of a calling card for the brand and pushed Blue Zushi into connoisseur territory.

In 2023 it won Best Overall Strain and Best Tasting at the Zalympix awards in Los Angeles. Seed versions followed, most notably from Dutch Passion, which rebuilt the cross from a Kush Mints mother and an Original Z clone. That's a big part of why the name is now recognised well beyond California.

Candy-sweet on top, cool and earthy underneath. The contrast is the whole point.

Blue Zushi genetics and lineage

Blue Zushi is Zkittlez x Kush Mints: a sweet, fruit-forward parent crossed with a cool, earthy one.

Zkittlez is one of the best-known fruit strains of the last decade, bred from Grape Ape and Grapefruit. It supplies the vivid berry, tropical and candy-sweet top notes.

Kush Mints is a Seed Junky Genetics cross of Bubba Kush and Animal Mints, and one of the most-used breeding parents of recent years. It brings the cool, minty edge and the earthy Kush depth that grounds the sweetness. Animal Mints is also one of the parents of Wedding Cake.

Is Blue Zushi indica or sativa?

It's a hybrid that leans indica. Kush Mints carries a strong Bubba Kush influence, so strain databases generally list Blue Zushi as indica-dominant.

Worth knowing

Indica and sativa describe plant ancestry and structure more than anything you can predict about a product. The terpene profile tells you far more. More in Sativa, Indica, Hybrid: Do They Still Matter?

Blue Zushi terpene profile

Our current batch is led by three terpenes, in this order:

LeadsMyrceneFruity · earthy · ripe

Carries the ripe berry and tropical depth from the Zkittlez side and gives the profile its body.

SupportsCaryophyllenePeppery · warm · spicy

The earthy, slightly spicy backbone from the Kush Mints side. The only common terpene known to bind directly to the CB2 receptor.

LiftsLimoneneCitrus · bright · sweet

A bright citrus lift that sharpens the candy notes, echoing Zkittlez's Grapefruit ancestry.

Terpene order varies by batch and grower; some US lab results show limonene leading. New to terpenes? Start with Terpenes: What They Are and Why They Matter.

What does Blue Zushi smell like?

Sweet and fruity first: berries, tropical fruit and something close to boiled sweets from the Zkittlez side. Then a cool, minty freshness comes through, with an earthy Kush depth and a faint gas underneath.

That sweet-then-cool contrast is what people tend to remember. It keeps a very sweet profile from feeling one-note.

Why is it called Blue Zushi?

"Zushi" is widely read as a nod to its two parents, Zkittlez and Kush Mints, with "Blue" pointing to the blue-tinged buds that selected phenotypes show. The Ten Co. has never published an official explanation, so treat that as the popular reading rather than gospel.

Blue Zushi as a THCA hash tea

At The Bud Works, Blue Zushi is a pressed THCA hash tea. Our current batch is lab tested at 25.9% THCA, led by myrcene, caryophyllene and limonene, with Delta-9 THC at or below the 0.2% UK limit. The full certificate of analysis is on the product page.

Pressed hash releases its aroma steadily through a steep, which suits a contrast-driven profile like this:

First minute

Sweet berry and tropical candy notes come through first.

Minutes 2–3

A cool, minty freshness starts to cut through the sweetness.

By minute 5

An earthy Kush depth settles in at the base of the cup.

Brewing tip

Around 80°C rather than a rolling boil keeps more of the volatile limonene and caryophyllene. Full method in Making the Cup.

Intended for hot-water herbal tea infusion only. Not for combustion.
