GMO, also called Garlic Cookies, is an indica-leaning hybrid bred from Chemdawg and Girl Scout Cookies. It's known for one of the most savoury profiles in cannabis: pungent Kush, sharp pine and a garlic-adjacent depth. In the UK it's available from The Bud Works in two THCA tea extracts, both built on GMO Cookies genetics.
Where GMO came from
GMO is usually credited to Mamiko Seeds, who crossed a Chemdawg (Chem D) with the Forum cut of Girl Scout Cookies. The breeder Skunkmasterflex has also been credited with finding the standout phenotype, so the origin story has more than one version.
What everyone agrees on is the result: a strain that broke completely from the sweet, fruity trend and became a favourite with people who like their cannabis loud and savoury. It's also gone on to parent a whole family of gas-forward crosses.
Not a subtle cup. That's the point.
GMO genetics and lineage
GMO is Chemdawg x Girl Scout Cookies.
Chemdawg is one of the foundation strains of modern cannabis, behind Sour Diesel and OG Kush. The Chem D cut brings the pungent gas and the savoury, garlic-adjacent character GMO is famous for. It's also the family behind Stardawg.
Girl Scout Cookies, in its prized Forum cut, adds the earthy Kush, a touch of sweetness and the layered spice. GSC is also a grandparent of Lemon Cherry Gelato and much of the Sherbet family.
Is GMO indica or sativa?
It's a hybrid that leans indica.
Indica and sativa describe plant ancestry and structure more than anything you can predict about a product. The terpene profile tells you far more. More in Sativa, Indica, Hybrid: Do They Still Matter?
GMO terpene profile
Both of our GMO extracts are led by the same three terpenes:
The earthy, pungent Kush body of the profile.
The spice and savoury depth. The only common terpene known to bind directly to the CB2 receptor.
A sweet citrus edge that cuts through the pungency.
Order varies slightly between our two extracts and between batches. New to terpenes? Start with Terpenes: What They Are and Why They Matter.
What does GMO smell like?
Pungent and savoury first: sharp pine, pungent Kush and a garlic-adjacent depth from the Chem side. Underneath sit sweet citrus and a complex spice from Girl Scout Cookies.
It's gas-forward and assertive, and it's the savoury note that sets it apart from almost everything else.
Why is it called GMO?
Not because it's genetically modified. GMO is usually said to stand for garlic, mushroom, onion, after its savoury aroma. Some dispensaries renamed it Garlic Cookies, a nod to the Cookies parent, and you'll see GMO, GMO Cookies and Garlic Cookies used for the same strain.
GMO at The Bud Works
We carry GMO genetics in two tea extracts, each pairing it with a second profile:
Both are lab tested, with Delta-9 THC at or below the 0.2% UK limit. Each product page carries the full certificate of analysis.
Pungent Kush and sharp pine come off the cup straight away.
The savoury depth builds, with sweet citrus alongside.
The partner profile comes through: menthol and woodsy notes, or sweet herbal vanilla cream.
Around 80°C rather than a rolling boil keeps more of the volatile limonene. Full method in Making the Cup.
Intended for hot-water herbal tea infusion only. Not for combustion.
